I will hazard a guess that most people don’t associate the acting profession with religion.  But we at Hollywood Pres know differently. There are indeed Christian actors and I am so proud to be one and equally proud to be a member of the Actor’s Co-Op here on our campus.  An entire troupe of actors who love and worship our Lord, Jesus Christ.  Many in our congregation have seen our shows and continue to support us (and we are greatly appreciative of that) but I...

Greg and Chris Callison have been supported by FPCH since Chris went to Berlin with PCUSA to begin a ministry with the Kurdish people. On one of her furloughs, Greg was her chauffeur, taking her from church to church to give presentations. He feel in love with her along the way, and they were married. He was also a Presbyterian pastor, and resigned from his pulpit, and joined Chris in Berlin. He had to learn German and later, one of the Kurdish languages, but they became a team reaching out to K...

It is anything but easy to send our children to summer camp each year. It means socking away money, reworking family vacation time, spending hours gathering gear and filling out forms. It means endless prayers for their safety and happiness. It’s not easy, but it is important. It is important that they have the freedom to run around with their friends, to try new things, to stretch themselves. It is important that they create bonds apart from us in our larger church family, that other ...

“Fear not for I am with you. Be not dismayed, for I am your God, I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. I will uphold you with My righteous right hand”. Isaiah 41:10 We live in a fallen world and as a result trouble comes to all of us. Sometimes adversity comes suddenly and out of our control leaving us unexpectedly devastated as we experience physical and emotional pain.As we reflect on our lives we can recall many times when we were faced with adversity and sometimes we even ask oursel...

"Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way, you will fulfill the law of Christ." Galatians 6:2   Did you know that 1 in 5 individuals are coping with a mental health condition at any given time? This includes things like depression, anxiety, substance misuse, and many others. That means that almost every one of us knows someone, sits in a pew with someone, loves someone and/or is someone dealing with mental health challenges. As the family of Christ, we pride ourselves in caring for one...

How many of us have heard that the Christian life is like a journey?  And in any journey there is a beginning and an end as well as some changes that take place between those points.  I often envision a vacation to some foreign country where I partake of the food, culture, and community there; that I am so transformed and enlightened by my experiences there; that when I return home I am no longer the same.  The problem with my idea of a journey is that journeys are not always volu...

This is my 410th Musing for the ePres as Senior Pastor of Hollywood Presbyterian. And it is my final one. These brief columns have been a fun way to share thoughts on life, faith, reading, travel and people. They truly have been musings–not heavily researched or complete essays. Starting next Friday, this column will transition to “Musings from Our Leaders,” with a different elder writing each week.  I’ve been reflecting these last weeks, knowing that a big transition is near for me and ou...

Once again I am musing with you from 40,000 feet up. Literally. It's Tuesday morning, and I'm on a brightly-colored Southwest Air plane that will eventually deposit me in Missoula, Montana. Once a year I meet for a retreat with seven younger-than-me pastors, one of whom lives in Missoula. We will stay at a cabin about 40 minutes out of town. We will hike, talk, eat well, talk, worship, talk...you get the idea. This year we read two books to discuss during the week. One is Kate Bowler's Everythin...

For the last thirty years, my quest in life has been to be one person. A whole person. It’s so tempting to be many different people and wear many hats.  I remember my years in business, trying to manage a career, be a good husband, tiptoe into fatherhood, stay connected with friends, serve as a church elder...I wanted to do it all. I needed to. I was juggling a million balls, but inside I felt like there was more to life. What might it look like to be ONE person? Just me. We can do the sam...

I haven’t really counted them up yet, but I’m guessing that in 8 ½ years at Hollywood Presbyterian, I have preached roughly 400 sermons. Most of those were preached either 2 or 3 times, depending on our worship schedules. This means that along the way, you have heard me quote many people. I read a great deal, and inevitably that reading creeps into sermons. The names you hear most frequently from me are C.S. Lewis, N.T. Wright, Flannery O’Connor, Walker Percy, Eugene Peterson, Martin Luther King...
