Welcome home. That phrase keeps popping up. We used it several years ago for a Hollywood Pres ad in local college newspapers to invite students to worship. Welcome home. It popped up again recently on a slide when Anne and I visited an LA area church while on vacation. Welcome home. I’ve heard it this week a few times since we returned from our time away. Every time I hear it, I am drawn back the year we moved to Los Angeles. In August of 2010 I preached at Hollywood for the firs...

I pull into the parking lot of the local Starbucks. I have a car, and money for coffee and something to eat. I have a full day ahead of me, which will be both demanding and fulfilling. As I approach the store, I pass by two of the local characters. I think they are homeless, and sleep down by the river. Some days I talk with them, or grab coffee for them. I wonder what their day will hold. I sit at the traffic light in Pasadena. It's a long wait. A woman walks across the street pushing a baby c...

The combination of my early arrival for a short hiking date in Griffith Park, and my friend being a few minutes late added up to that rarity in life: a little space and time. It was Thursday, a little before 7am, and the Observatory parking lot was mostly empty. The morning fog was still nestled over Los Angeles, and only glimpses of the nearby hills were visible.   Twenty minutes. I had about twenty minutes. What to do? Grab the cellphone and check messages? Pick up the book from...

“It is by the grace of God that a congregation is permitted to gather visibly in this world to share God’s word and sacrament.  Not all Christians receive this blessing.”                                                   &nb...

Twenty years ago this month I was ordained as a “Minister of Word and Sacrament,” so pardon me while I reflect just a little bit. Twenty years ago I was 37 years old. I left a business career after 11 years, spent three years in New Jersey and received a Masters in Divinity from Princeton Seminary. We were heading off to Minneapolis, where I would start work as an Associate Pastor.  Twenty years ago this month, I was standing in our home church in Seattle for a service of ordination wi...

Do you remember the 2007 movie Lars and the Real Girl? Lars is a Minnesota man suffering from mental delusions, and he ends up with a girlfriend who is a life-size doll.  Literally, a full-size plastic doll! In Lars’ small town, everyone buys into going along with this delusion in the hopes of helping Lars get well. They act like she is a real girl. As Lars begins to get healthier, he senses his need for the doll is almost finished, so he decides that the plastic girlfriend is ver...

I’ve worked at my desk intensely for several hours- phone calls, emails, worship calendar, services. I lean back in my chair. I take a break from my computer screen and let my eyes wander. They land on...The Shelf. Oh, I have many shelves in my office, all crammed with books. But there’s only one of...The Shelf. It is the two-foot cubicle which houses my mementos, all of them gifts from other people. Most were intended to make me laugh, and they still do. For example, there are t...

Exodus, chapter 20. The people of Israel are gathered at the base of Mount Sinai. The near presence of the Lord on the mountain is represented by fire and smoke, thunder and lightning. Moses is called up to receive, among other things, the ten commandments.  God speaks to him, but the people are terrified by the noise and rumbling. They say to Moses “Speak to us yourself and we will listen. But do not have God speak to us or we will die.” This is a fascinating scene, and expresses an ...

I’m sitting at a coffee shop in Larchmont, in a lovely back courtyard.  It is 6:30am, and I’m the only one here. My mind is jumping all over, so I decide to just go with it and write down the stream of consciousness and see what happens:  It’s very quiet. The neighborhood is barely stirring. A weak sun begins to show itself.   I have a sermon percolating from Philippians. Our son Nick is coming down from Seattle for a long weekend with us.      ...

Eloquentia Perfecta. In literal Latin it means “perfect speech.” It is a term with roots in ancient Greek rhetorical studies, and which the Jesuits have borrowed heavily from since the sixteenth century. In fact, several Catholic universities, like Fordham in New York City, use it as a title for their core academic curriculum to stress reading and writing skills. Articulate, eloquent speech can take many forms, but one way or the other it has to do with communicating gracefully, in a ...
