My husband and I always knew we wanted to raise our family in Los Angeles. Michel is a native Angeleno and was born and raised right here in Hollywood, and I moved to LA right after college to become a Young Adult Volunteer with the PC(USA). We live about a mile south of the church and started regularly attending Hollywood Pres. just after our daughter Clara Fern was born in 2013.
Thankfully, right around that time, a group of women from church were coming together to form “Moms Connect.” I was thrilled to find a community I could learn from and grow with, a place to be nurtured and supported. I never missed a Wednesday. Over the last three years, these women have played an important role in my life.  We take care of each other, we laugh and we’re honest, and one of our favorite things to do is encourage one another and offer our prayers and hope. When our son Lucas was born, Michel and I were in the thick of it. It was a season of utter exhaustion: a newborn, a toddler, and the flu that wouldn’t go away. Knowing that we were too tired to grocery shop, meal plan, or cook, this group of women (along with other church members) came alongside us and delivered multiple meals each week for over a month. It was our daily bread. These ladies held us in the most practical, loving way and never let go. We were recipients of the deepest generosity.

When Michel and I look back on that season, we are so humbled and thankful for all those who cared for us (especially from the church members we hardly knew!). We named our son Lucas Mateo because Lucas means “Light” and Mateo means “God’s Gift.” We are reminded, constantly, over and over again, in community and in friendship, of God’s good gifts of light and everlasting love.
