We are very excited to welcome Justin Nelson and his family into our church community! Justin joins Maddie, Lindsay, and Jennifer as our fourth Fraser Fellow, and his areas of intern focus this year are Careers, Men’s, and Marriage ministries.
Justin is a So Cal native. He and his wife Victoria met in middle school, at age 12 (and together won the “Mr and Miss Personality” yearbook superlative!). Justin was not raised in a Christian home, instead meeting Jesus at age 18 while watching a TV evangelist. His background and surprising conversion have informed his lifelong desire to see and point people to Jesus in “unexpected places.” Thus, after his years at University of Colorado where he invested a lot in the local church and campus ministry, he chose instead to work in the marketplace.
Victoria and Justin’s first daughter, Moriah, was born with a congenital heart defect and CHARGE syndrome. For seven years, their lives were mainly based in Northern California, revolving around different hospitals, treatments, and care facilities for Moriah. There was much good during this time: Moriah was joy-filled despite her illness, and the Nelsons welcomed two more children into the world, Jadon and Olivia. But, as protracted suffering often causes, they also experienced deep isolation and struggled with questions like “where is your church, God?” This question led them to start a worship service at their state-run pediatric rehabilitation center for a while, and continues to inform their understanding of the church’s calling to those who suffer.
Moriah sadly passed away at the end of 2014, and the Nelsons moved back to Southern California to be near extended family. Justin applied to Fuller Seminary in order to find a safe space to ask his questions and wrestle with God in his pain, a place to stop and heal. Justin is excited for the opportunity to explore a calling to serve the church, and we are so grateful for God’s leading him to us. Justin and Victoria join our church family having just welcomed baby Shane into theirs!
