After many fabulous retreats at Lake Cachuma, our diligent Partners class researchers found the absolute best group campsite in all of Southern California just outside Bakersfield at Lake Isabella. Clean restrooms, running water, and a grocery store just close enough to ward off the misery of a forgotten toothbrush and melted ice.  Walking distance to the lake, brilliant stars at night, breeze in the pine trees to lull us to sleep.
By far the best part is hanging out for two days with our families and friends. We share a potluck feast, swap forgotten items and extra bacon, marvel at each others’ kids, get to know new friends, worship together, lounge by the lake, celebrate birthdays, chat, find quiet, jump off rocks, swim, kayak, make s’mores, hang out at the Native American cultural center, and come to terms with not showering for 48 hours. Ingenuity is the mother of invention, they say, and I counted probably half a dozen ways to make morning coffee. A rattlesnake, a bat, and a toad showed up this year too, along with the miracle of a lake full of deep blue chilly water (after watching the waterline sink year after year).
Heading out to the wilderness together is an act of courage and adventure.  In recent years, Partners class has reached out across the FPCH community to encourage anyone who wants to pitch a tent to join us.  Memorial Day weekend 2018 we plan to go again!  Mark your calendar and come along.
