Dear Hollywood Pres Family- Greetings!  I want to let you know about a possible situation this Sunday, March 4th at the church. It is possible that there will be a small group of people picketing near the church around 9am. There is no reason to be afraid or avoid church whatsoever. If it happens, it will probably be about 6-7 people on a sidewalk nearby with signs.   Many of you have probably heard about Westboro Baptist Church. They are a very small “hate group” (mainly one ex...

Medical Benevolence Foundation   MBF has been an adjunct for the Presbyterian Church’s Missionary “arsenal” for many years. Early on, the denominational leaders realized they needed medical assistance for the many doctors serving in its arsenal of medial missionaries worldwide. At the latest count, this ministry is serving 118 hospitals and clinics in 36 countries. It builds buildings, clinics, and related structures, supplies medicines, nurses’ scholarships, and helps with patient care e...

We are very excited to welcome Justin Nelson and his family into our church community! Justin joins Maddie, Lindsay, and Jennifer as our fourth Fraser Fellow, and his areas of intern focus this year are Careers, Men’s, and Marriage ministries.   Justin is a So Cal native. He and his wife Victoria met in middle school, at age 12 (and together won the “Mr and Miss Personality” yearbook superlative!). Justin was not raised in a Christian home, instead meeting Jesus at age 18 while watching a ...

“The kingdom of God is at hand.” These were some of the first words we heard at Hollywood Pres in the 1990s – heading towards 3 decades ago now! – coming as young singles for a series taught by Dallas Willard (head of USC’s philosophy department, who also wrote many books on spiritual formation).Joel was in a men’s readers group, and Rebecca in a women’s Bible study that were both affiliated with Act One and InterMission, film and arts mentoring ministries hosted by FPCH. As we spent more time w...

My husband and I always knew we wanted to raise our family in Los Angeles. Michel is a native Angeleno and was born and raised right here in Hollywood, and I moved to LA right after college to become a Young Adult Volunteer with the PC(USA). We live about a mile south of the church and started regularly attending Hollywood Pres. just after our daughter Clara Fern was born in 2013. Thankfully, right around that time, a group of women from church were coming together to form “Moms Connect.” I...

by Pam Tuszynski   In December, 2016, a Children’s Ministry angel went to be with the Lord. Martha Roberts was a FPCH church member for 53 years and was involved in several lay ministries before she became the Director of Children and Families which she executed faithfully for 17 years. Martha was a very special lady! She was instrumental in hiring me as Director of the preschool over 17 years ago. Martha loved children. She enjoyed inspiring the children with bible stories and activities...

Many people wonder what it’s like to get involved in teaching a Children’s Ministry class. Here’s a first-hand account from a new volunteer. Keep reading and consider whether you would like to get involved in what God is doing through Children’s Ministry. Contact Courtney Moore to begin the volunteer application process: This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. By Mary Whittemore   Last weekend the Cathedral Choir enjoyed its annual fall workshop retreat in preparation for return to the choir loft on Kick-off Sunday. We experienced something totally different as the retreat this year was held on board the Queen Mary in Long Beach! We enjoyed a lovely private and large rehearsal room along with a separate dining area. We extend kudos to our wonderful conductor, Ariel, who presented a well-balanced selection of music including many new pieces, and...

Christ in the Feast of Tabernacles aims to enrich the church’s understanding of the gospel by going back to the Jewish roots of the Christian faith. We explain how the Feast of Tabernacles (Sukkot) is a vibrant part of Jewish life today, as well as how the holiday offers a wealth of meaning for Christians who value their Old Testament heritage. This sermonic demonstration uses a variety of visual aids to show the rich history of the feast and its attendant traditions. The speaker transports you t...

After many fabulous retreats at Lake Cachuma, our diligent Partners class researchers found the absolute best group campsite in all of Southern California just outside Bakersfield at Lake Isabella. Clean restrooms, running water, and a grocery store just close enough to ward off the misery of a forgotten toothbrush and melted ice.  Walking distance to the lake, brilliant stars at night, breeze in the pine trees to lull us to sleep.  By far the best part is hanging out for two days wit...

Combining Sanctuary Services in the FallNancy Norris and Mac Heald Crunch the Plan   Nancy:  Mac, what’s wrong? Mac:  The sky is falling, Nancy.  We’re doomed. N:  What in the world are you talking about? M:  The church’s Worship Ministry Team is pulling the purple rug out from under us. N:  No, the carpet in the sanctuary is a matter for the Facilities Team, and they’re doing a great job of considering all the options.  Just be patient! M:  Not tal...

Sunday school is not just for children – but what happens in children’s Sunday school classes is an essential element to creating a life-long walk with Jesus Christ. On September 25th, families joined Children’s & Family Ministry volunteers after services for our first Children’s Ministry Fall Fellowship. Together we ate pancakes and bacon, mingled, and learned about the important things being taught in our children’s Sunday school classes. This new form of open house created an informal dy...

“Whom shall I send, and who will go for Us?” the Lord said. Isaiah answered, “Here am I! Send me.”   Isa. 6:8 Beginning with this E-Press issue you will have the opportunity to learn of and pray for our 2015 Short Term Missions and missionaries.  Like Isaiah, four Short Term Mission leaders have heard and answered “Lord, here we are, send us.”  In this issue you will find Joel Larson’s article announcing the first short term mission of the season. Not far behind Joel and...

By Shay Case   If you’ve ever volunteered at the Lord’s Lighthouse, then you know what it’s like to serve lunch to 200 friends and neighbors from our community on Sundays after church.  The upper terrace bustles with energetic guests, busy volunteers, engaging Bible studies and homily messages and live music.  The time can fly by quickly as we scramble about to serve lunch, offer coffee refills and pass out dessert before folks head out the door and we start breaking down t...

by Karen Bayz As follow up to our annual meeting, I ‘d like to write about pledges and how important they are to the church operating budget.  Please read on if you care about our church’s long term mission and commitment to serving Christ in Hollywood. A pledge is a commitment to provide monthly, or at some other regular interval, contributions which help meet the church’s operating needs.  Pledges, as commitments, allow the church to develop an annual budget with expenses for pro...

One of the knocks on Hollywood—and Los Angeles in general—is that it’s too spread out. Visitors to L.A. from other big cities like New York and Chicago often gripe that you can’t walk anywhere, that everything in L.A. takes a car ride. And they’re sort of right. One small corner of the city, however, is bucking that stereotype. All within a stone’s throw of the intersection of Cahuenga Boulevard and Selma Avenue while many restaurants and music venues have been neighborhood favorites for year...

John Brownson has been employed as a member of our custodial staff since 1984. Many of you know that John suffered an accident falling from a ladder onto his right side on May 9, 2012. John was diagnosed with torn tendons in his right shoulder and had a three hour surgery to reconnect those tendons in July.    John’s doctor was pleased with how the surgery went and has John in physical therapy for the next 6-8 weeks. Despite his injury, John has faithfully been on campu...
