The Hollywood Presbyterian Finance Team, and the Session are unanimously recommending to the Congregation that a house received by bequest from the will of Nancy Stanford be sold, with proceeds used to fulfill the desires of her will. 1)    Where is the house?  Lake View Terrace, approximately 20 miles north.   2)    When did the church re...

Every week, there is a prayer request in the Sunday bulletin for one of our mission partners, locally and around the world. This week it's African Enterprise. The primary focus of this ministry is evangelism (and they have been evangelizing the cities of Africa for more than 50 years), but they also impact those they encounter in personal and tangible ways.   African Enterprise works with at risk women in Malawi, through programs that give them marketable skills while also teaching them t...

It was Summer 2001 and God was calling the Kawamoto family to seek a new church home. We had heard about Hollywood Pres many times over the years, yet it always seemed to be “so far away” from our house that we never thought about paying a visit.  We had good friends from our prior congregation who made FPCH their new church home and suggested we might want to check it out, so we gave in.  Oddly enough, it was a guest pastor whose name I don’t recall who delivered a message that seemed...

Here’s someone to celebrate- Brenda Cox!  Our long-time parish nurse through QueensCare has retired, and was duly honored at a retirement party hosted at Hollywood Presbyterian recently.  Brenda has blessed our congregation and community for decades. Along with Nancy Lusk and others, she helped start the FPCH Health Cabinet which contributed blood drives, flu shots, seminars and the Lord’s Lighthouse footwashing. Brenda is well-loved by our urban ministry crew. She has long been a pr...

What do an Episcopalian and a twice-baptized, Catholic-turned-Evangelical have in common? If you guessed FPCH and a last name, you are right! We are the Barry family – comprised of Jenni, Adam, Max, and Noah – and we’ve been at FPCH since early 2015. After moving to Los Angeles in 2014 and trying out the cool-but-too-loud churches in the area, we landed in a pew at FPCH. With the feeling that we found a unicorn church that checked all of our boxes, we deci...

It was my mother who first suggested we visit FPCH. She fondly remembered attending, along with my dad, Saturday night “Sings” there as a teenager in the 1940’s. Even at that first Sunday service, I felt that I’d found something I’d been missing for a long time.  I was raised in the church, but after college, although I never completely lost my faith, I wandered widely, neglected my spiritual life, and, for twenty-five years never attended any church regularly. Coming to Hollywood Pres that...

Talking Bibles International was founded by Harvey Hoekstra after he retired from being a long time missionary in Ethiopia. Harvey and Lavinia Hoekstra raised their sons Mark and Paul “on the field” and they now administer the work. Mark is President. Paul is the engineering genius who figured out the technology needed to record scripture on tiny tapes that can run on solar power. He is Vice President, Operations. The headquarters is in Escondido, California. The ministry raises the money ...

One of the true treasures of Hollywood is live music on a summer evening at the Hollywood Bowl.  Even when the temperatures are soaring it always feels a little cooler once you have found your seat, get a cold drink and the music begins.  There is something so peaceful about the space and the setting always lends to a special night. This past week the Lord’s Lighthouse Ministry was blessed with a Ticket donation from the Hollywood Bowl.  Our Outreach Ministry received 20 tickets ...

Foundation For His Ministry was started by Charla Pereau back in 1961 when a wee Mexican Indian orphan baby arrived at the Pereau home. Chuck was a fireman and Charla had four children of her own and was a busy mother and housewife. As their love for this baby grew, so did their love for hundreds of sick, abandoned, and orphaned little ones in the streets of Mexico. The story of this vision and the Vicente Guerrero home in Baja California began. The story is told in a book called Charla’s Childr...

It might seem like FPCH slows down quite a bit during the summer… but there’s at least one area where things kick up a notch: Children’s & Family Ministries! Our summers are always full as we minister to families and take advantage of the summer rhythm. 2018 has been particularly full with…   Summer Nights: When families from the church, preschool, and neighborhood came together for food and fun. Each night’s dinner was hosted by a family and we spent a couple of hours getting to kn...

In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.  Job 12:10 Several weeks ago, we said goodbye to our sweet, big (100+ lbs!), old dog, Lute.  Anyone who has loved an animal knows how painful that is.  Lute joined our family when our son, Jake, was in 2nd grade -- Jake is now a senior in college.  It is such a cliché, but it’s hard to remember a time when Lute wasn’t with us.  As he approached 14 (90 in dog years!), we knew we were on borrowed...

FPCH’s acquaintance with Jim and Jodi McGill began in 1996 when we were preparing to go to Malawi to wire Embangweni and Livingstonia hospitals for electricity, at the suggestion of Medical Benevolence Foundation. Jim was the on-site coordinator and handyman who went to South Arica to order and procure the equipment needed for the project. He made sure it was there when the first team arrived. (The church had raised $50,000 for this.) Jim met team #1 at the airport with an ambulance and trailer...

We'd like to focus our attention on Dan and Elizabeth Turk this month. FPCH helped to support Elizabeth’s parents, Bill and Nancy Warlick when they served with PCUSA in Zaire, Congo, and Zimbabwe in the 1980s and 90s. Elizabeth and her two brothers grew up in Africa. So, it was not surprising that she became a missionary. She took nurses’ training and met and married Dan, who was earning a PhD in horticulture. They were assigned to Madagascar where their skills are much in demand. Elizabeth is ...

by Maddie Mitchellweiler   I almost didn’t say yes to working as a staff member at our Winter Refuge this year. I worried that my schedule might be too busy, the morning shifts might be too early, and even that my faith might be too small. Now, just a few weeks after our shelter’s close, I can’t imagine missing out on all that those ten weeks together held.   It was actually a lot like winter camp. That’s what I often ended up telling friends and family who asked about the experienc...

We are Thomas and Heather Walters, and we have been attending FPCH for nearly four years. On Sunday, Oct. 15th, Hollywood Pres hosted several dozen friends from The Message Center, a church in Gardena. It marked the fourth or fifth time our churches have intentionally overlapped. On this particular Sunday, Pastor Dwight Radcliff shared a bit in worship and led us in prayer, and a TMC elder read script...

By Will Anderson   A week before our church hosted the FIAT (Faith Initiative to Abolish Trafficking) event, Pastor Joel led our young adults group in a listening exercise with Colossians 4:2-6. There Paul writes, “devote yourself to prayer, being watchful and thankful. And pray for us, too, that God may open a door for our message, so that we may proclaim the mystery of Christ…” As we sat in silence and reflected on what God may be teaching us through Paul’s words, “devote,” “watchful,” ...

By Grace Kim, member & new volunteer   I remember the first child baptism I attended at FPCH. Pastor Dan brought the child into the pews and we crowded around him. The Voyager Adult Sunday School class is coming to a close as of this Sunday. Eight years later, the Mariner class had grown too large and eventually made a split. The older part of these Mariners became the Voyagers who ...

Without question, breakfast is my favorite meal of the day. Coffee is always a part of it.  The richer and darker, the better. And I never befoul it with cream or sugar. If I’m in a hurry and the milk hasn’t gone south yet, I’ll have cold cereal. With a little more time, I’ll have oatmeal. Hated it as a kid. Love it as an old dude. I never go for the instant kind; the real stuff is so much better, and milk isn’t required. And then there might be toast. Do you remember toast? Unless you’re...

On Sundays, we meet together and worship. It’s such a privilege to be together. But what about the rest of the week – those Mondays to Saturdays? When Pastor Dan asked me to write this week’s musing – I thought I might offer a few thoughts on those other six days of the week. They mean a lot, those other days. And if we ponder the concept for a while, it turns out that they mean a great deal to God as well. So, how do we all spend our Mondays through Saturdays? From what I know of our congre...

This month we will feature Didi Hegnauer and her husband Peter, who serve with Child Evangelism Fellowship in Brussels, Belgium. How did this all get started? Didi’s family lived in La Jolla, California where they were part of the First Presbyterian Church congregation. Her mother was involved in music and Did grew up to be an artist. As a young adult, she was hired by Hallmark and went to Kansas City for her first job. During her first summer vacation, she returned to La Jolla and went to ...

God is good. God delivers. God restores. These things I knew to be true as I prepared to attend the IJM Global Prayer Gathering back in April. And yet, I also knew the stories of this short weekend were going to be graver and grittier than what I’m used to encountering. Could God be good, deliverer, and restorer in these places too? Bonded labor. Sex trafficking. Property grabbing. I had heard of these things before, but in distant, looming ways. In the prayer rooms, concepts became reality. Pr...

I am a product of the marriage of my English mother and American father. I grew up in London, England, but have spent the latter half of my life in Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Maryland, and California. My two sisters, parents, and I are now spread out between three continents. People ask where I’m from at their own peril!  A few years after graduating Davidson College, I moved to Northern California, where I worked at Vintage Faith Church in Santa Cruz. I am a California native and nomad; I was raised by my wonderfully faithful family in Anaheim, attended Vanguard University in Costa Mesa, and most recently lived in the Santa Cruz Mountains. I didn’t give much thought to pursuing ministry until halfway through college when I unexpectedly switched out of pre-med studies and into theology. To my own surprise, I fell in love with exegesis, preaching, and spiritual practices. After graduating, I took an internship at Mount Hermon Conference Center ...

Jim & Jodi McGill, who serve with PCUSA in Northern Malawi, are our highlighted Missionaries of the Month for May. Jim was our guest at FPCH last Sunday and this was the first time in many years that he has been able to visit us and share about the vital ministry he and his wife, Jodi, have been doing for over 20 years in Africa.

How did we meet them in the first place? Back in 1994, a Medical Benevolence Foundation (a ministry FPCH supports) representative came to FPCH and said he wanted to make a suggestion: two hospitals in Northern Malawi had no electricity and our missionaries there, Dr. Paul Jewett and his wife Judy, had to operate by the light of kerosene lanterns. Could we consider a project of wiring these places for electricity? The Missions Committee took that challenge to prayer and decided this would be a huge challenge, but we would try to accomplish it. Two years later, in 1996, we had gathered  16 people and $50,000 for the project. Jim McGill, who worked at Embangweni Hospital, went to South Africa and purchased the wires, plugs, switches, etc. that would be needed, and our church furnished two teams of eight to go to Malawi that summer. Miraculously, four electricians were among the number of those applying to go. Part of the group went to the hospital in Embangweni and part to Livingstonia. (Jim and Jodi were our hosts at Embangweni). The Jewetts had left by then, and Dr. Beckky Loomis was the only doctor there at the time. The rest is history.

How did they get there? Jim’s father had been a missionary doctor in Congo for most of his career, but decided to transfer to a rural place for his last term before retirement. Jim & Jodi were newlyweds at the time, and went to Malawi with his parents.. One of Jim’s first projects was to build a chapel at the hospital which he did and dedicated it to his father. His dad retired and Jim and Jodi, a nurse, stayed on. In the summer of 1996, the FPCH adventurers arrived on the scene. Among those participating in the first team were Jack & Anna Kerr, Tori Christiansen, Audrey Parks, and Trudy Dumont. Some of those on the second team were Diane Leggewie and her daughter, and Shay Case. Those who did not wire worked in rural clinics, organized the hospital dispensary, painted wards, and taught fish farming. Jim and Jodi were gracious in hosting and masterminding orientation to rural Africa.

In the last 20 years they have continued serving there. Jodi has continued organizing village health clinics, helped get a bed net project (nets treated to ward off mosquitos and re-dipped regularly), and helped choose recipients for nursing scholarships. Jim became an expert in clean water wells, and now masterminds all the wells in Northern Malawi, choosing well teams to maintain the wells, fire bricks for buildings, maintain ambulances (the only vehicles around), and anything else that needs the touch of a skilled craftsman.

Along the way, the McGills have adopted six Malawian orphans- two sets of twin boys, and two little girls. Jodi is currently in Georgia with the children, helping them with schoolwork, while Jim travels to speak at supporting churches. He just returned from five weeks in South Sudan, assessing the water needs of that poverty stricken country.

This past Sunday, Jim was with with us in our worship services, spoke at some of the adult classes, and atttended a potluck lunch with the Global Missions team (as well as had a reunion with the few who are still around who worked with them in Malawi in 1996).

Jim and Jodi are among our Missionary Heroes. We encourage the congregation to pray for them as they return to a land that is suffering from severe famine.

When my husband Thomas and I went with the FPCH young adult team to the IJM (International Justice Mission) prayer gathering in Washington, DC, I wasn't sure exactly what do expect. I knew there would be prayer -- and lots of it. And I was so excited to go, honored and deeply grateful to those who helped us get there (thank you!) But a part of me couldn't help but wonder...were we really just going to pray all day? I mean, do you really need a conference to pray?  The short answer, of cour...

"I'm worried that my child will lose interest in following Jesus." This single sentence - in different variations - has been uttered by almost every parent, grandparent, and guardian I know. These loving adults have experienced the life-transforming grace of Jesus Christ. They want God's best for the current young generation. And they know - first hand - how tempting the alternative can be. Their fears are not unfounded. According to research by The Fuller Youth Institute, 40-50% of students who...
