As we live into our Growing Young survey, we thought you’d appreciate this memory of Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie from a young person Adam Sutherland who has attended FPCH over the past several years.       Pastor Joel   Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie: A Deep Correspondence By Adam Sutherland   Dr. Lloyd Ogilvie has graduated from life. The influence of his Love resonates across the world, and I am blessed to have known him during my time in the Los Angeles Presbyterian neighborhood. The...

I have been a member of FPCH since 1995.  I was married here, my son was baptized here, we were the holy family one Christmas and more.  I even can attribute the life of my son, now 20, to the late Dr. Arthur Johnson (no relation), a FPCH member who delivered my son under difficult circumstances.  But that is a story for another day. Four and a half years ago, I held a funeral service at FPCH for my wife.   Again, I pondered the question – “Why do difficult things happe...

Sunday, February 24: Our last full day in Xpujil. Church meets in the morning and evening.  Just before 10am, we walked to Congregacion El Sinai.  Warmly welcomed, we sat between our Spanish speakers to get a sense of what was happening and find Bible passages.  Song lyrics were projected on a screen, we could sing along phonetically.  The sanctuary was full of sunlight, lizards rested on the stained glass cross.  With the gift of translation, I understood parts of the...

SECOND MESSAGE FROM RUTH 7/15/19 Dear Church Family, Our transitional pastor position now is posted throughout the denomination.  Many thanks to those who have suggested potential candidates for the position; We have followed up on your suggestions, and while most of the wonderful pastors folks have suggested are not available because they are obligated to other ministries, we have several candidates we are evaluating and we feel strongly that God will send us just the right person to lead...

Maybe because I work at a studio, one of the frequent ice-breaker questions we get asked during workshops is “if you were a super-hero, what would your super-power be?”  How would you answer?   While I’d love the ability to fly, jump through time or be cloaked invisible…sometimes I wonder what it would be like to have the power of resilience? Resilience is frequently described as our ability to thrive in challenging circumstances.  It’s different from endurance which is the abili...

Our worship band has put together a Spotify playlist of songs we regularly sing each Sunday in worship. Our hope is that you'll take these songs into your week, sing along with them as you drive or do the dishes, and let your heart be encouraged by the scriptural truths. Listen to these words from songwriters Keith and Kristyn Getty, from their book Sing."Singing takes Sunday’s truths into Monday. The songs we sing on Sunday provide the soundtrack for our week. If we don’t sing about a part...

Short Term Missions Letter 2019 January 14, 2019 Dear Friends and Family, In 2018, Short Term Missions took us to Malawi, summer camp at Forest Home, and an International Justice Mission conference. Prayers were offered and answered. Believers were discipled.  Pastors were trained and equipped. Kids were seen, known, and loved in Jesus’ name. Our network of contacts with workers, leaders, and churches around the world was strengthened.   At the heart of FPCH Short Term Missions is ...

Every week, there is a prayer request in the Sunday bulletin for one of our mission partners, locally and around the world. This week it's African Enterprise. The primary focus of this ministry is evangelism (and they have been evangelizing the cities of Africa for more than 50 years), but they also impact those they encounter in personal and tangible ways.   African Enterprise works with at risk women in Malawi, through programs that give them marketable skills while also teaching them t...

It was Summer 2001 and God was calling the Kawamoto family to seek a new church home. We had heard about Hollywood Pres many times over the years, yet it always seemed to be “so far away” from our house that we never thought about paying a visit.  We had good friends from our prior congregation who made FPCH their new church home and suggested we might want to check it out, so we gave in.  Oddly enough, it was a guest pastor whose name I don’t recall who delivered a message that seemed...

Here’s someone to celebrate- Brenda Cox!  Our long-time parish nurse through QueensCare has retired, and was duly honored at a retirement party hosted at Hollywood Presbyterian recently.  Brenda has blessed our congregation and community for decades. Along with Nancy Lusk and others, she helped start the FPCH Health Cabinet which contributed blood drives, flu shots, seminars and the Lord’s Lighthouse footwashing. Brenda is well-loved by our urban ministry crew. She has long been a pr...

What do an Episcopalian and a twice-baptized, Catholic-turned-Evangelical have in common? If you guessed FPCH and a last name, you are right! We are the Barry family – comprised of Jenni, Adam, Max, and Noah – and we’ve been at FPCH since early 2015. After moving to Los Angeles in 2014 and trying out the cool-but-too-loud churches in the area, we landed in a pew at FPCH. With the feeling that we found a unicorn church that checked all of our boxes, we deci...

It was my mother who first suggested we visit FPCH. She fondly remembered attending, along with my dad, Saturday night “Sings” there as a teenager in the 1940’s. Even at that first Sunday service, I felt that I’d found something I’d been missing for a long time.  I was raised in the church, but after college, although I never completely lost my faith, I wandered widely, neglected my spiritual life, and, for twenty-five years never attended any church regularly. Coming to Hollywood Pres that...

One of the true treasures of Hollywood is live music on a summer evening at the Hollywood Bowl.  Even when the temperatures are soaring it always feels a little cooler once you have found your seat, get a cold drink and the music begins.  There is something so peaceful about the space and the setting always lends to a special night. This past week the Lord’s Lighthouse Ministry was blessed with a Ticket donation from the Hollywood Bowl.  Our Outreach Ministry received 20 tickets ...

Recently I had the opportunity to attend Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated (AKA) International Conference held in Houston Texas. AKA was established in 1908 at Howard University and is made up of college educated women. Currently there are 300,000 members nationally and abroad. At the event which was held at George R. Brown Convention Center there were 19,500+ women under one roof, quite a sight to see! Although we were large in number there was a feeling of belongingness and togetherness ...

To all who brought or sent flowers, cards, pastries and cookies. To all who called us on the phone, rang our doorbell or stopped us as we walked. To all who gave us countless hugs, kisses or just kind words of sympathy and encouragement. To all those who lifted us up in prayer. To all those who honored our beloved Ashley with your tributes and memories. To all of you who have been with us in body or spirit and to all of you who have overwhelmed us with your love and support...   ALL of yo...

In His hand is the life of every living thing and the breath of all mankind.  Job 12:10 Several weeks ago, we said goodbye to our sweet, big (100+ lbs!), old dog, Lute.  Anyone who has loved an animal knows how painful that is.  Lute joined our family when our son, Jake, was in 2nd grade -- Jake is now a senior in college.  It is such a cliché, but it’s hard to remember a time when Lute wasn’t with us.  As he approached 14 (90 in dog years!), we knew we were on borrowed...

“…share in the inheritance of the saints in the kingdom of light.” Colossians 1:12   This past week, I settled in to a place I’ll be staying for a bit while I find housing in LA. It’s a gift in so many ways… and it’s got some lighting issues.   Being in a new place always makes me a little panicky. My mind gets caught on corners it hasn’t gotten used to yet, my senses triggered by weird sounds and shadows that aren’t yet familiar. So, like I always do when I’m somewhere new, on my fir...

by Maddie Mitchellweiler   I almost didn’t say yes to working as a staff member at our Winter Refuge this year. I worried that my schedule might be too busy, the morning shifts might be too early, and even that my faith might be too small. Now, just a few weeks after our shelter’s close, I can’t imagine missing out on all that those ten weeks together held.   It was actually a lot like winter camp. That’s what I often ended up telling friends and family who asked about the experienc...

A long-time member of Hollywood Presbyterian talked about our Annual Meetings with a trace of shock and amazement in his voice in 2016: “Can a congregational meeting honor God, take care of necessary business, be fun and end on schedule as promised? The answer is YES!”  Well, it happened once again on January 28 in the Mears Center. Here are a few highlights:·         Jeff Loeb was the emcee and kept things clipping along. ·   &nbs...

We are Thomas and Heather Walters, and we have been attending FPCH for nearly four years. We’ve been members for three of those, and it’s been an honor to connect to this community and see the ways God is moving. Thomas is an Inquirer under the care of FPCH, in his first quarter at Fuller Seminary. Heather is a writer, and in fact the reason we originally moved to Los Angeles from Portland, Oregon was so that she could pursue a more creative side of her career! Both of us love connecting in the ...

On Sunday, Oct. 15th, Hollywood Pres hosted several dozen friends from The Message Center, a church in Gardena. It marked the fourth or fifth time our churches have intentionally overlapped. The men of the two churches have gathered several times for breakfast, and a number of Hollywood folks worshipped with TMC last year. Pastor Joel Larson has been the connecting person. On this particular Sunday, Pastor Dwight Radcliff shared a bit in worship and led us in prayer, and a TMC elder read script...

My husband and I always knew we wanted to raise our family in Los Angeles. Michel is a native Angeleno and was born and raised right here in Hollywood, and I moved to LA right after college to become a Young Adult Volunteer with the PC(USA). We live about a mile south of the church and started regularly attending Hollywood Pres. just after our daughter Clara Fern was born in 2013. Thankfully, right around that time, a group of women from church were coming together to form “Moms Connect.” I...

Last month, I had the privilege of visiting Israel for two weeks. Fuller Seminary Professors Dr. Marianne Meye Thompson (New Testament) and Dr. Christopher Hays (Old Testament) conducted a class in the Holy Land. The first question many people ask at each site is "how do we know this is the authentic location?" While in most instances there is historical data to confirm the approximate accuracy of each site or event, our professors reminded us that perhaps the first thought we might consider is ...
